Washington Elementary
Janie Wardlow
Janie Wardlow was born in Imperial Valley.  At the age of 10 years old, her family moved from El
Centro to San Diego.  She attended public schools in San Diego and received her B.A. in
Anthropology with Minors in History and Spanish at San Diego State University.  After completing
her coursework for her teaching credential, she began teaching in San Ysidro School District in
1976 in a bilingual 6th grade classroom.  She taught English classes to students who had recently
arrived to the United States and also was the school’s ASB Advisor and Yearbook Advisor.  During
this time she completed her Masters in Administration from Point Loma Nazarene College in Point
Loma.  

In 1992, she began teaching a 6th grade class at MacDowell Elementary School in the San Diego
Unified School District.  In 1994 she was selected to mentor new bilingual intern teachers for the
interns and designing and teaching courses for the interns to complete their requirements for their
credentials, in 1999 she became the Program Manager of the District Intern Program, which
included Bilingual Elementary Intern Teachers, Secondary Math, Science and English Teachers
and Pre-Interns (Teachers in classrooms with Emergency Permits only.)

In 2003, she was asked to become the principal of Tierrasanta Elementary School.  She has
worked closely with the teachers and parents to build a strong community school that has attracted
many charter and private school parents back to enrolling their children in a public school.

Ms. Wardlow has lived more than 30 years in Playas de Tijuana.  Her two sons, Alejandro and
Marco Antonio, attended schools in Playas until they completed high school.  Her eldest son,
Alejandro has just completed three years at Harvard Law School, and is currently working in the
downtown area in a law firm, his brother, Marco Antonio graduated from UCLA as a history major
and wants to pursue his Master’s in Latin American Studies.  Ms. Wardlow is bilingual, but feels
she is a “little rusty”.  She looks forward to practicing her Spanish with parents and students.
